First Snowfall of Season Possible as Weekend Cold Snap Grips Parts of UK
LONDON – Get ready to wrap up warm! A significant cold snap is set to arrive across parts of the UK this weekend (October 25-26), bringing plummeting temperatures and the potential for the first widespread snowfall of the season, particularly over higher ground.
Forecasters are predicting a sharp drop in temperatures starting late Friday and intensifying through Saturday and Sunday, as colder air moves down from the north. This shift marks a distinct change from the milder conditions experienced earlier in the month and serves as a firm reminder that winter is approaching.
The primary focus for potential snowfall is currently on the hills and mountains of Scotland and perhaps some higher elevations in Northern England and Wales. While significant accumulations at lower levels are unlikely for most, some areas could see a dusting or even temporary light coverings, especially during heavier showers overnight or early in the morning when temperatures are at their lowest.
“We’re seeing the first proper intrusion of colder air this autumn,” explained a meteorologist. “While widespread, disruptive snow isn’t expected for major cities, people in northern and upland areas should be prepared for wintry conditions, including sleet and snow, especially on hills.”
Beyond the snow risk, the weekend will be characterised by widespread sharp frosts, particularly overnight in rural areas, and blustery, cold winds, making it feel even colder than the thermometer suggests. Drivers are warned to be cautious of potentially icy patches on untreated roads, especially during the early mornings. For more UK weather updates, visit our UK News section.
